How to get your photos in Sealift

Low-resolution photo Left: Low-resolution photos reproduce poorly and are often unusable.

Photos can tell a story. Great photos tell a story better.

When Sealift tells the story of the great work that our mariners are doing, photos add interest and help stories to be understood.

You can help.

When something happens on your ship or at your command, take some photos and send them to us. Awards, promotions, retirements, conreps, vertreps and about anything else can be submitted to Sealift.

To take higher-quality photos, and therefore increase the odds that your photos will be included in Sealift, here are a couple of tips.

  • You can take either digital or regular photos.

  • Show the whole story in the photos. For instance, if the subject of the picture is a ship, show the whole ship. Let the Sealift staff crop as needed.

  • Identify ALL the people in the photos by name, rank and service. We get some photos that we would like use, but if people are not identified, we cannot use them.

  • If you take normal photos, send them by express mail to

      Editor, Sealift
      914 Charles Morris Ct., SE
      Washington Navy Yard, D.C. 20398

  • If you take digital photos, make sure you take them on the HIGHEST resolution possible. The HIGH RESOLUTION setting will allow you to take fewer photos, but the photos you do take might get used. Low resolution photos DO NOT reproduce well for publication.

  • Digital photos should be e-mailed to daniel.kuester@msc.navy.mil.

Use these guidelines and give yourself the best chance to get your photos in Sealift.
