At-Sea Employment Opportunities

MSC is offering Recruitment bonus incentives (one time bonus) to newly hired personnel in critical ratings. These ratings and bonuses are currently identified as:

    Able Bodied Seaman (Announcement Nbr 03-162-01EX) (Retention Allowance)
    Deck Engineer (Announcement Nbr 03-328-01EX) ($3000)
    Unlicensed Junior Engineer (Announcement Nbr 03-331-01EX) ($3000)
    Refrigeration Engineer (Announcement Nbr 03-324-01EX) ($3000)
    Pumpman (Announcement Nbr 03-332-01EX) ($3000)

ALL PERSONNEL MUST BE FOUND FIT FOR DUTY THROUGH THE FORCE MEDICAL OFFICER AND SIGN A ONE YEAR EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT TO OBTAIN THE ABOVE BONUS INCENTIVES.

ABLE SEAMAN ARE OFFERED EITHER THE BONUS OR THE RETENTION ALLOWANCE LISTED UNDER THE POSITION DESCRIPTION. NEWLY HIRED A/B'S WILL GET THE CHANCE TO SELECT ONE OF THE TWO OPTIONS WHEN HIRED.

Military Sealift Command is seeking career-minded U.S. Coast Guard-qualified applicants for seagoing jobs with the MSC fleet operating worldwide. Below is a list of open recruitment registers. MSC is actively recruiting and accepting applications for the below listed positions, this means that we are hiring for these positions at present or we anticipate hiring for these positions in the near future. Job Descriptions:

    Able Bodied Seaman (Announcement Nbr 03-162-01EX) (Critical Rating) - The Able Bodied Seaman is an unlicensed member of the ship's deck department crew and requires the endorsement of Able Seaman Special, Limited, or Unlimited on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document. The Able Bodied Seaman stands watch while in port or at sea and performs routine deck department maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, painting, preserving the ship. Other responsibilities include duty underway replenishment rigs, dry/liquid cargo handling in both cargo holds and on deck, forklift operation and helicopter flight deck operations on all classes of MSC civil service crewed ships. (STCW95 CERTIFICATION IN RATINGS FORMING PART OF A NAVIGATIONAL WATCH (RFPNW) IS DESIRED FOR ALL QUALIFIED A/B'S. IF YOU ARE NON-COMPLIANT WITH STCW95 CERTIFICATION MSC WILL CONSIDER YOU FOR EMPLOYMENT BASED ON APPLICANT SIGNING A STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING TO ACHIEVE COMPLIANCE WITH STCW95 WITHIN A SPECIFIC TIMEFRAME) (Salary range: $39,274 plus overtime)
    NOTE: BASE SALARY INCLUDES A RETENTION ALLOWANCE THAT INCREASES BASE SALARY OF $31,419 to $39,274.

    Engine Utilityman (Announcement Nbr 03-365-01EX) - The Engine Utilityman is an unlicensed member of the ship's engine department crew and requires an endorsement of Oiler and Fireman/Watertender or qualified member of the engine department of any unlicensed rating on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document. The Engine Utilityman assists licensed engineers, performs general maintenance and repair of the ship's machinery, material handling equipment, including elevators and winches, and various other on board machinery. Engine Utilityman duties also include standing engine room watch on all classes of MSC civil service crewed ships. (APPLICANTS MUST BE STCW95 COMPLIANT IN (RFPEW) RATINGS FORMING PART OF A ENGINEERING WATCH). (Salary range: $27,342 to $34,861 plus overtime)
    The Engine Utilityman position is an MSC unique position. The USCG endorsements that make up this MSC unique position are Oiler and Fireman/Watertender.

    Deck Engineer (Announcement Nbr 03-328-01EX) (Critical Rating) - The Deck Engineer is an unlicensed member of the ship's engine department crew and requires an endorsement of Deck Engineer, Machinist, or qualified member of the engine department of any unlicensed rating on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document. The Deck Engineer provides maintenance and repair to machinery such as winches, elevators, forklifts, and other associated equipment. This position includes using machine shop skills to fabricate replacement parts utilizing various types of machinery. (Salary range: $32,562 to $37,620 plus overtime)

    Unlicensed Junior Engineer (Announcement Nbr 03-331-01EX) (Critical Rating) - The Unlicensed Junior Engineer is an unlicensed member of the ship's engine department crew and requires an endorsement of Unlicensed Junior Engineer or qualified member of the engine department of any unlicensed rating on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document. Unlicensed Junior Engineers stand engine room watch, assist licensed engineers with control room operations and maintain the shipboard propulsion equipment and auxiliary machinery on all classes of MSC civil service crewed ships. (APPLICANTS MUST BE STCW95 COMPLIANT IN (RFPEW) RATINGS FORMING PART OF AN ENGINEERING WATCH). (Salary range: $28,620 to $40,912 plus overtime)

    2nd Electrician (Announcement Nbr 03-351-01EX) - The 2nd Electrician is an unlicensed member of the ship's engine department crew and requires an endorsement of Electrician or qualified member of the engine department of any unlicensed rating on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document. The 2nd Electrician performs routine maintenance, repair, operation of ships electrical systems. This includes but is not limited to various types of switchboards, generators, motors, lighting systems, electrical deck cargo handling equipment, two and three wire DC systems, and single-phase and polyphase AC systems. Uses common power tools and light machine shop equipment. Assists and participates in the safety testing and maintenance of portable shipboard electrical equipment. Work is performed on all classes of MSC civil service crewed ships. (Salary range: $36,347 to $43,946 plus overtime)

    Refrigeration Engineer (Announcement Nbr 03-324-01EX) (Critical Rating) - The Refrigeration Engineer is an unlicensed member of the ship's engine department crew and 0requires an endorsement of Refrigeration Engineer or Qualified Member of the engine department of any unlicensed rating on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document. Applicants must hold a universal Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) certificate. The Refrigeration Engineer maintains and repairs all types of on board refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, including large cargo hold systems, containers, small stateroom refrigerators, food service equipment, air conditioning compressors, filtering systems and all other refrigeration equipment on all classes of MSC civil service crewed ships. (ALL APPLICANTS MUST BE STCW95 COMPLIANT IN (RFPEW) RATINGS FORMING PART OF A ENGINEERING WATCH). (Salary range: $34,963 to $39,876 plus overtime)
    THIS POSITION REQUIRES UNIVERSAL OZONE DEPLETION SUBSTANCES (ODS) CERTIFICATE.

    Pumpman (Announcement Nbr 03-332-01EX) (Critical Rating) - The pumpman is an unlicensed member of the ships engine department crew and requires an endorsement of Pumpman or Qualified Member of the engine department of any unlicensed rating on the U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document. Applicant must also hold Tankerman Assistant (DL) endorsement on MMD. The pumpman assists licensed engineers in the liquid cargo fuel line-ups, tank line-ups, product requirements, and any ballasting requirements. Primary duties include operating, maintaining, and repairing the vessels liquid cargo transfer system machinery and equipment that includes pumps, coalescers, separators, strainers, filers, valves, fittings, associated piping systems, and deck machinery. Incumbent is fully capable of handling, operating, and maintaining gas freeing and tank cleaning equipment and capable of sounding tanks using both innage, ullage, and electronic gauging tapes. Capable of determining oil water interface levels. Uses hand tools and measuring instruments to maintain and repair pump room equipment. Work is performed on all classes of MSC civil service manned vessels. (Salary Range: $34,434 to $35,555 plus overtime)
