The crest of the USNS SAN JOSE
The origin of the insignia of the USNS SAN JOSE lies in early maritime history. The circular shape symbolizes the manner in which the seas encompass the earth. The two undulating lines come from ancient Greece and represent the two oceans that border the United States. The grape vine and wheat are taken from the seal of the city of San Jose, California. They typify the city's role as a center for agriculture. The wheat also signifies man's need for nourishment and relates to the SAN JOSE's mission of suppling the fleet with food. The olive branch stands for the United States Navy's role as the peace keeper of the seas. The upraised forearm and fist have their source in medieval heraldry and mean "ready for action."
Collectively, the insignia expresses the SAN JOSE's dual heritage from the city and the United States Navy and it's dual mission: The first is to aid in keeping the peace and the second is to carry stores to United States Navy ships where ever they may be.
