Army Prepositioned Stocks-3, or APS-3, ships operate prepositioned vessels around the world for the United States Army. Currently, 9 ships provide quick-response delivery of Army equipment for ground forces from strategic locations in the world's oceans.
The APS-3 ships include seven large, medium speed, roll-on/roll-off (LMSR) vessels: Each of these ships has been named for an Army Medal of Honor recipient. The LMSRs are loaded with Army combat equipment. Two other APS-3 ships, MV SSG Edward A. Carter, Jr., USNS Charlton, USNS Dahl, MV LTC John U. D. Page, USNS Pomeroy, USNS Red Cloud, USNS Soderman, USNS Watkins and USNS Watson, contain ammunition.
With its close, professional working relationship with both vessel operators and the operational chain of command, the APS-3 ships meet the Army's need for ships that can sail within hours of notification; ships that perform as a credible deterrent force; ships that are capable of providing combat equipment and sustainment supplies worldwide on time, every time.
