1980-1989

    USNS Kilauea
  • 1980 Ammunition ship USNS Kilauea, formerly a USS ship, was decommissioned and transferred to MSC's NFAF. Six more former-USS ammunition ships transferred to MSC between 1995 and 1997.
  • 1982 Combat stores ship USNS Sirius joined MSC's growing NFAF. Two more conversion Sirius class combat stores ships joined NFAF between 1982 and 1983.
  • 1984 MSC handled underway replenishments almost around the clock during the Granada rescue operation.
  • 1986 USNS Henry J. Kaiser, the first of fifteen Kaiser class oilers, was delivered to MSC. These oilers were the first USNS oilers originally built specifically for civilian crews. USNS Comfort
  • Spring 1987 Newly-delivered hospital ship USNS Mercy, a converted super tanker, conducted a humanitarian training mission to the Philippines and other South Pacific Islands. Mercy's Navy medical personnel provided medical attention ranging from outpatient care to major surgery to more than 73,000 people. USNS Comfort, the second Mercy class hospital ship, was delivered in late 1987.
  • December 1987 USNS Mowhawk rescued 28 people from sinking, Kuwaiti-flagged, merchant vessel MV Qarough 700 miles east of Palm Beach, Fla.
  • May 1989 USNS Bellatrix transported combat support vehicles into the Panama Canal region after President Bush sent 2,000 troops to safeguard American interests there.
  • 1989 Ammunition ship USNS Kilauea, fleet ocean tug USNS Narragansett and oiler USNS Passumpsee rescued 64 people foundering in small boats at sea.
